Goosebumps
How to Kill a Monster

The book How To Kill A Monster is about how a family kills a monster and this old abandoned house. The family was trapped in the house with the monster with no way out and nowhere to go. The book had a lot of exciting parts and action. My favourite part in the book was how they killed the monster. This is why I recommended this book to another student, if you like action books then this book is for you.

The Week of May 16 - 20

The Weekly Update

We started our week off with a circle.  We explained to talked about how far the students have come since September and how much they have grown. Students are progressing in all aspects of their learning here at Sagonaska.

As I explained at the end of last week, students started the newest math unit - measurement.  Students are investigating volume.  The coolest part is, that the kids are using MinecraftEdu to inquire about the volume of rectangular based prisms.

Rocket AWESOMENESS!
As part of our weekly "Celebrate the Hero" goal learn something new, one of the high school teachers Miss. Miller, gave students the opportunity to learn how to build a rocket! All of the students that took part had the opportunity to learn about what makes a rocket fly, and the importance of the design phase.

Coming Home...

Your children will also be coming home this weekend with their LD pamphlets for next year.  Please go through the pamphlet with them and if there is something they want to add, we can do that pretty easily.

Also coming home this week is a permission form to go to The Brakeroom.  The Brakeroom is a coffee/bike shop that has recently opened in Belleville.  The proprietor of the shop, Adam, face timed in with us while we were planning our pamphlets.  We are going for a visit to see his how his plan came to fruition and also to showcase the student's pamphlets. Please fill out the permission forms and send them back to the school on Tuesday.

Have a fantastic long weekend with family and friends!

The Week of May 9 - 13, 2016

Another busy week!

In Language, we are lesson 82 of 90 in Empower! Woohoo!  This is the time of year that big gains in reading are made! Students have had a lot of time to learn the 5 decoding strategies, and now it is a matter of practicing their skills to progress as far as they can!

As well as coming to the end of the Empower program, students have been working hard on their self advocacy pamphlets.  Your child will be bringing these pamphlets home next week.  Please take 5 or 10 minutes to go through it with them.  The pamphlet will be a very handy tool next year at your child's home school.

Students have also posted their first ever book reviews.  Navigate to your child's name on the right hand side of the blog and read their latest work!  We have come light years from September.  I am extremely proud of my students!

In science, students are using a program called TinkerCad to create their own fidget toys!  After learning all about forces and structures, we are putting their knowledge to the test! We challenged students to design, print, reflect and revise on their creations. Once they have finished the fidget toys, students will be blogging about their experience, and reflecting on the science behind their toys!

In Math, we are finishing up our integer unit today! Since the start of term two I have been lucky enough to have Mr. Richardson as a team teacher to help teach math! We have joined the two grade seven classes in order to make math EVEN more fun!

On Thursday, we brought all of the elementary students to the Belleville Public Library where the fantastic Mr. Charles created two scavenger hunts.  One was in the art gallery, and the other was in the library.  Although no one won the grand prize of the iTunes gift card, all of the students had a great time learning about the ins and outs of a public library.

Next week in math we will be starting our new measurement unit.  Mr. Richardson and I got together with Mr. Mortaley (Sagonaska's A.T. guru) to plan a "Mine" blowing unit!

Mr. Hayes and myself recently wrote an article for the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario (LDAO).  We are proud to announce that it was published on their website last this week. Click here to check the article out.

The book Ghost House by Paul Kropp was a very enjoyable Book. To young boys named Zach and Taylor, gets offered  big money to stay the night in a haunted house, or at least that's what there friends say. Will they take the deal? Ghosts aren't real, right? This book is amazing!  It gives suspense!  You feel like you're connected to the book, you want  to read on!  I would recommend this book for people my age (12), and at the same or similar reading level (DRA 40). Book Review By John

The title is White Fang
Author Jack London
Ages 8 to 12

I would recommend White Fang for other people because it has a lot of action.
The story is about White Fang, a Wolf dog, and his interactions with people and other dogs. Jack London describes White Fang’s journey from the wild to civilization. Jack London describes the scenes so well I feel like I was there. If you are looking for an action filled book, this is a book for you!
